Football Whisperer's AFC North Preview

Baltimore

The Talk: What changed?

The Whisperer: Last year, one era of Baltimore football ended and another quietly began. Former Ravens defensive assistant Jesse Minter now owns the headset, and his hiring means their rugged, hard-nosed identity isn’t changing anytime soon.

Last Word: All eyes on Lamar.

Cincinnati

The Talk: Will Joe be upright?

The Whisper: All that’s holding Cincinnati back is their sieve-like offensive line that often handcuffs one of the most explosive offenses in the league. It all hinges on their ability to protect their quarterback and capitalize on their elite offensive weaponry.

Last Word: The trenches will tell the story.

Pittsburgh

The Talk: Brave new world.

The Whisper: The Steel City won’t have Mike Tomlin to kick around anymore as the man who led Pittsburgh out of the tunnel for 19 years is headed to a broadcast booth. His departure leaves a leadership gulf that will touch every part of the organization. How well the Steelers adjust to life without Mike T. will define their season.

Last Word: This could get ugly.

Cleveland

The Talk: Whose team is it?

The Whisper: In Bernard Malamud’s classic, “The Natural”, Roy Hobbs is a supreme baseball talent who chooses selfishness over ethics. Following a long absence, Hobbs returns and realigns himself with positive influences and regains his status as a premier player. Not so long ago Deshaun Watson was one of the top quarterbacks in the league … a natural to many. His travails are well-documented. Now he’s back. Realigned. If he’s able to return to his former self … the Browns could be special.

Last Word: Not the same old Browns.
