The Whisperer Remembers ... Bill Bergey.
Big, Fast, Tough ... All in One
Philadelphia has always been a town for hard-nosed, rugged defensive ball players who took names and snatched hope from the opposing team. When you looked at the schedule and saw the Eagles on your schedule, no matter if it was home or away, you knew you were in for a long day. That day got even longer the day this man arrived.
He was big for that generation … shoot, he’s big for this generation. Standing 6’4 and weighing in excess of 240 pounds, he clogged the middle of that Eagle defense, making his presence known regardless of the down and distance. He honed his skills in Cincinnati before moving east and while his years in Philly were hard years from the won-loss perspective, make no mistake about it, the hardest thing on the field regardless of which team won, no matter which team lost … was this guy.
A graduate of Arkansas State by way of South Dayton, New York, he set the standard for all others to follow and follow him they have because in the minds of many, he’ll always be the leader. Whisperer Nation, stop whatever it is you’re doing and give a hardy round of applause and sprinkle in a mean stare as we remember the greatness of the meanest guy on the field … former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker deluxe … Mr. Bill Bergey. #RIPSir
