The Original Big Safety

The Whisperer Remembers ... David Fulcher.

The first thing that jumped out at you was his size. He sure was big for a safety. Yes, he was a safety, built more like a defensive end, he moved like a running back, and hit like a Mack truck. When he came out of Arizona State, measuring in at just a shade below 6’4 and weighing just a shade over 240 pounds, people didn’t know what to think or do with him. He was a safety sure enough, but in the NFL where everything moves faster, would he be able to keep up was the primary concern. He answered that question with the quickness.

With the quickness he answered questions and put concerns to rest and for the better part of a decade, he patrolled the back four, making plays and making the team he played for one of the premier outfits in the era. Run stopping was his specialty and with his immense, powerful frame, he made pulling guards and tackles make business decisions rather than go head-to-head with him and all his fury.

He was truly a sight and for that Whisperer Nation, let’s give him one. Stand to your feet and give a thunderous round of applause for the original big safety, the man who needs no introduction because there is none like him. Whisperer Nation hold your glasses high, stand your ground, as we recognize the greatness of former Cincinnati Bengals safety … Mr. David Fulcher.
