The Whisperer Remembers ... Delton Hall.
The Meanest Corner on the Block
Nasty is the first word that comes to mind when you think of this guy. Nasty not just because he played the game with an attitude. No, he gets that description because everything about his game was … nasty. From the way he lined up over a receiver to the way he took on linemen outweighing him by more than 100 pounds, sometimes more, to the way he pummeled running backs down after down. Yes, this guy was nasty personified.
He was big for his era in a time when a lot of teams were going for the slight, sleek corners, but there was no room for slight or sleek in his game. Standing well over six feet while carrying a couple hundred pounds on his sturdy frame, to say that he was imposing would be a true understatement. With the speed of a sprinter and the mind of a coordinator, he was perfect for the harsh Pittsburgh winters and the rough and tumble style of back then was the AFC Central.
His skill set ushered in a cornerback trend that still resonates today. Teams go out looking for a corner, they look for big, they look for fast, they look for physical, they look for nasty, they look for him. They look for him and today, Whisperer Nation, let’s look his way and hold our glasses high as we celebrate former Pittsburgh Steeler great … “Beltin” Delton Hall.
