The Saturday Afternoon We'll Never Forget

The Whisperer Remembers ... Vernon Perry.

In the 70’s, no one did that passing thing like Dan Fouts and the San Diego Chargers. Those boys were must-see TV in the highest order and whenever their highlights came on, you found your way to the television … and found yourself in awe of their scoring ability and the man who made it all work … Dan Fouts.

Mr. Fouts was incredible, finding open receiver after open receiver, baffling defenders and coordinators alike, until Saturday, December 29, 1979. That’s the day he found this guy four times … yeah, no big deal right, wrong. This guy, the one he found four times … was playing for the other team.

A stingy hitter who never met a bone-rattling opportunity he didn’t like, he single-handedly took the Charger offense, considered to be the best the league had to offer at the time, down that sunny San Diego afternoon. His play was the talk of the league, propelling his team to the championship game, a step shy of their first Super Bowl.

The Oilers and Luv Ya Blue didn’t have enough to get past the Steel Curtain the following week, but with the awe-inspiring performance this man put on, he may not be wearing a ring, but he’ll always be a champion.

Let us never forget how bright his star shined that day so today, Whisperer Nation, hold whatever you’re drinking high, Jackson State University stand tall … as we remember the greatness of former Houston Oilers all-world safety … Mr. Vernon Perry.
