Top 11 Things
Cooper DeJean, Baton Rouge, Sark, Derrek Cooper ... and 7 Other Things.
There isn't enough room on the roster for every defender in that HOU training camp. Some won't make the team. But when they leave, they'll take with them that Texans defensive philosophy and approach meaning whichever team signs them will be signing an incredible player.
I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Cooper DeJean in the Defensive Player of the Year conversations. With the departure of Reid Blankenship, a lot more responsibilities and potentially, a lot more plays will fall into his lap.
Still hoping this Jayden Daniels-LSU dustup blows over. Both teams have seasons to worry about and Daniels, while he had that stellar rookie campaign, he might want to start focusing on staying healthy and getting this part of his journey, not the one he was on in Baton Rouge, back on track.
Speaking of Baton Rouge, with each passing day I'm more and more sold on Lane Kiffin cooking up something special down in the Bayou. I mean let's be honest, the man did elevate Ole Miss to the national conversation ... imagine what he could do now that he has some real resources at his disposal.
The HOU defense is going to be a beast again this year, but they might not be the best defense in Texas. As quiet as it's being kept, that DALL defense isn't just going to be improved, they are going to be special indeed.
Virginia Tech has the best entry in college football, and for the better part of a decade, their entry has been the highpoint of their afternoon. With James Franklin leading the way, the Hokies will still have the best entry in the sport and now, they might have a pretty good team.
Big year in Austin for Sark and the Horns. The fans and boosters are getting a little restless and while the man has put up a 71% winning percentage, that's still not good enough for the Orangebloods...they want a title, another title I should say.
Speaking of fans, wondering if the Alabama fans have picked themselves up off of the floor after seeing their team was ranked outside the top ten for the first time since Moby Dick was a minnow. It's an accurate ranking and it still gives the Tide the chance to achieve all of their conference and national goals. Settle down.
At some point this year, Georgia is going to get into a shootout. It could be early against Tennessee, maybe the middle of the year against Ole Miss and Texas also has shootout potential ... I'm just not sure Georgia has the guns on offense, and the defense can only stand for so long.
Looking for Brian Thomas to have a big year in JAX and they're going to need his production due to the loss of Etienne Jr. and all he brought to the picnic. It'll be interesting to see if Lawrence and the Jags continue on that same trajectory without a reliable runner like Etienne Jr. to lead the ground game.
He's third on the current depth chart, but by the season's end, freshman Derrek Cooper could be the lead man in that Texas Longhorns running back room. At the very least, he'll be a major contributor.
