COLLEGE
The Whisperer Remembers ... Anthony Poindexter.
The Essence of a Presence
Where were you? Yes, where were you on the night of November 2nd, 1995, the night the 2nd ranked Florida State Seminoles strode into Scott Stadium, with their 29-game ACC winning streak in tow, ready to make the Virginia Cavaliers victim #30. The Seminoles were heavily favored, but someone forgot to tell the Wahoo’s … someone forgot to tell this man.
With the game on the line and the Cavs holding a slim five-point lead, Florida State sat just outside the Virginia goal line. All the boys from Tallahassee needed was mere inches to walk away with another W and with all-world tailback Warrick Dunn, it seemed like a cinch. The play began and like a rocket this man came in, disrupted the blocking scheme, and from there his brothers in blue and orange finished the rest. The crowd stormed the field and for one shining evening, Charlottesville was the center of the college football universe.
The kid from Lynchburg, VA had it all: size, speed, brains, and toughness. The only thing he missed out on was good luck. At the end of his junior year, he was projected to be a first-rounder, but instead of jumping into the draft, he decided to stick around for another season. That proved to be a fatal mistake as his senior campaign was filled with injuries, including one freakishly gruesome incident that in effect ended what appeared to be a potentially brilliant NFL career.
Although the world never got to see you in all your greatness, today, let’s recognize the glimpse we did see, the small sliver of incredible we did taste. Whisperer Nation, stand tall and applaud with everything you got as we remember the greatness of former Virginia Cavalier safety supreme….Mr. Anthony Poindexter!
