The Whisperer Remembers ... David Richards

Can’t-miss was written all over this guy when came out of Highland Park High School during the mid-80’s. The first thing that jumped out was his size. He was a mountain of a man, standing 6’5 and weighing 315 pounds in the 80’s … larger than most NFL linemen. He toyed with those who dared to stand across from him in a manner that made college recruiters from one coast to the next and all points in between, drool.

When the time came to fax over his letter declaring where he would spend the next four years of his life, this Highland Park graduate didn’t have to go far since SMU, the school right down the street from his home, was his college of choice. Life was grand as the Mustangs were considered by many to have the most talented team in the land and his addition only widened the gap.

Sadly, shortly after his arrival the NCAA arrived and gave the program a sentence of death that abruptly ended his days in red, white, and blue before they really had a chance to get started. No worries as those same college recruiters started the process of wooing him all over again and this time, he decided an extreme change of scenery was required … so he headed west.

When he arrived, he took ears of frustration out on opponents, salvaging his career in the process. Whisperer Nation in honor of this big man, let’s all take a moment and give a much-deserved round of applause as we celebrate the awe-inspiring abilities of former SMU Mustang and UCLA Bruin…Mr. David Richards!
