The Whisperer Remembers ... Luther Brian Berry.
He Made Plays When Play Began Again
When SMU emerged from the depths of the death penalty and night once again became day, one of the first orders of business was to find weapons. Weapons that could be used to stretch the field score points, keep games winnable and strike fear into the hearts of defensive coordinators near and far. Yes indeed, the Ponies needed weapons … weapons like this man.
Coming out of Killeen Ellison High School, he was revered for his rare mix of precision route running, speed, and his ability to break a game wide open at a moment’s notice. Strong and tough, he’d volunteer to go over the middle, risking life and limb all in the name of service to his proud university. This man was quick enough to shake you on the outside and wise enough to know when and where to do whatever else needed to be done.
A cornerstone of the SMU resurgence following the Death Penalty years, the success we see today is due to the sacrifice men like him made yesterday and for that, we salute you sir. Whisperer Nation, let’s have a nice rousing round of applause for the playmaker … the one who made plays when SMU began playing again … the one and only… Mr. Luther Brian Berry.

One voice. No filler. The names stay off the masthead — the work doesn't need them.
