From the Moment, We Saw Him, We Knew

The Whisperer Remembers ... Walter Lewis.

He first burst onto the scene during halftime of a Sunday NFL game in the Punt, Pass and Kick competition. He punted further than anyone on that afternoon, his passes were perfect spirals, and rumor has it they are still waiting for them to come down…but the thing he did best was run….and boy could he ever. Needless to say, the young man from Brewton, Alabama stole the show that day, but rest assured, that wasn’t the last time he’d commit such a crime.

He didn’t run that day, but when he arrived in Tuscaloosa, he ran…he passed and when the situation called for it, he punted too. He was before his time but during his time no one did it better. Legend says that when he lowered to get under center the director would look over at his band and ready them, knowing something big, something good was on the way.

This man was the first African American to start at quarterback in Tuscaloosa, paving the way for a host of others who have come and gone with varying degrees of success. He was a talent with hot wheels and a live arm; the combination chilled the minds of opponents while warming the hearts of his fans.

Whisperer Nation, rise to your feet and raise your arms high to the sky as we remember the man whose arms and legs proved to be nothing short of a gift during his playing days … former Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback … Mr. Walter Lewis.
